With the
aim of promoting the involvement of boys and men in efforts to end female
genital mutilation (FGM), the Sudanese Association for Reproductive Health -
River Nile State, in partnership with the Center of Arab Women for Training and
Research (CAWTAR), held on March 18, 2024 at its headquarters, a screening of
the film "Circumcision is a Crime" by Ritaj Theater Band and
"Generation Salima" by Amer Hassan Mohamed Ahmed, followed by a
discussion on how to engage men and boys in efforts to end this practice.
Both videos
were made as part of the video competition for men and youth to make videos on
FGM, launched by IPPF-ARW and the CAWTAR as part of their joint project
"Combating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM): Fulfilling the 2030
Promise".
The meeting
was characterized by an important presence that was accompanied by
representatives of the Arab World Region of the Association and CAWTAR via Zoom
technology, leaders from the Association and the Ministries of Health, Youth
and Sports in River Nile State, in addition to a number of media professionals
and journalists.
The
representative of CAWTAR said that the Center for Arab Women for Training and
Research is interested in strengthening the partnership and bilateral
cooperation with the Association, and that it is moving forward to advance the
status of Arab women and empower them to play their roles at various levels. The
Executive Director of the Family Planning Association reviewed the role and
efforts of the association to sustain reproductive health and protect women
from practicing harmful habits in Sudan. He also pointed out that there has
been a decrease in the rate of this practice thanks to the cooperation between
the concerned authorities, indicating the need to implement laws to limit
female genital mutilation.
