Description
Over the past eight years,
the world has recorded an additional 30 million girls and women subjected to
genital mutilation, despite repeated campaigns to end the practice. This figure
was mentioned in UNICEF's report issued in March 2024.
While Kenya has achieved
results leading to the abandonment of the practice in most parts of the
country, Somalia and Sudan, in particular, are among the countries that require
more efforts to curb it, especially since they are nations experiencing
conflicts, wars, and population growth.
The report, as indicated by
its title, confirms that the issue is an international concern, highlighting
the need for intensified global efforts to combat a phenomenon that requires a
pace 27 times greater than the current one to meet the goals by 2030. This also
means, according to intersecting studies and other reports, that there needs to
be greater engagement of men and boys in advocating for the reduction of the
practice.
