Description
On September
30, 2024, the People’s Palace in Djibouti hosted a meeting of the Steering
Committee on Combating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), attended by the
Minister of Women and Family, the Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments,
and representatives from the Ministries of Justice and Health. This gathering,
organized by the Ministry of Women and Family in collaboration with the United
Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and international experts, aimed to assess the
progress made against a practice affecting around 70% of girls in Djibouti.
Djibouti is
one of 17 countries involved in the joint program to eliminate FGM, and it has
developed a comprehensive national strategy that includes awareness campaigns
and community discussions to highlight the harm caused by the practice. The
strategy is based on close cooperation between the government, civil society,
international organizations, and local communities to protect the rights of
girls and women and end the physical and psychological damage inflicted by FGM.
