Description
Djibouti announced the arrival of a high-level delegation from the Steering
Committee of the United Nations Joint Program to Combat Female Genital
Mutilation (FGM) from September 29 to October 3, 2024 with the aim of assessing
progress in eradicating the practice, which affects 70% of girls and women in
the country.
Djibouti has demonstrated a strong commitment to reducing FGM, resulting in
a decrease in prevalence from 43% among girls in 2012 to 31% in 2019.
Associations like "Desert Caravans" and "Maaref" have
formed alliances to raise awareness, reaching 370,000 people with their
messages. During the visit, the delegation will meet with government officials
and civil society organizations to discuss strategies for achieving the United
Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 5 to end FGM by 2030.
