Description
On 16 September 2025, Nation Africa reported that young Maasai men, known as "Morans," are emerging as leading voices against female genital mutilation. Some declared they will not marry girls who have undergone FGM, sending a powerful message that true masculinity is about protecting girls, not harming them.
These “male champions” collaborate with community leaders and local organizations to hold awareness dialogues and implement alternative rites that preserve cultural identity while avoiding physical harm.
In regions with youth engagement programs, FGM prevalence dropped by 10–15%; in Kajiado County, it fell from 78% in 2009 to 55% in 2022.
