Description
The Al-Salīm area in Northern
State, Sudan, witnessed a historic moment as the communities of Al-Khawli,
Al-Omda, Haj Hassan, and East Nile Unit officially announced their complete
abandonment of female genital mutilation (FGM), a step described as historic
and demonstrating the power of community will to achieve sustainable positive
change.
This societal shift was
notably marked by the active participation of boys and men, who played a
pivotal role in supporting awareness and advocacy efforts for the “Saleema”
campaign, which promotes the slogans “Every girl is born intact; let every
girl grow up intact.” This collective commitment strengthened communal
awareness of girls’ rights and the importance of protecting them from harmful
practices, reflecting a significant advance in the concepts of participation
and social responsibility.
The announcement was
celebrated in an official ceremony held at Al-Salīm Primary School, organized
by Sadaqat Organization in cooperation with UNICEF, and attended
by representatives from the Northern State government, the Child Welfare
Council, the East Nile administrative unit, and several civil society
organizations.
Speakers at the event
emphasized that this decision sets a model to be followed by other communities
in Sudan, illustrating the success of partnerships between official
institutions and community groups in fostering a culture of child protection
and ensuring a safe and healthy environment for every Sudanese girl.
