Description
In southeastern Senegal, men play a pivotal role in efforts to combat female genital mutilation (FGM) through the “Fathers’ Schools” initiative, launched by Plan International and its partners. This initiative aims to empower fathers and husbands to understand the health, social, and psychological risks of FGM, and to encourage them to protect their daughters and sisters from this harmful practice.
The “Fathers’ Schools” focus on community awareness and fostering dialogue among men about girls’ rights, the importance of education, and gender equality, while providing tools and support for men to become active partners in social change.
The initiative has gradually contributed to changing local norms, with many families beginning to prioritize girls’ education and to halt the practice within their households. It has also strengthened community discussions about the role of men in protecting girls’ rights, positioning them as leaders of change within their families and communities, rather than mere recipients of information.
The Senegal experience demonstrates that actively engaging men and boys in advocacy efforts helps achieve sustainable impact and enhances the success of community campaigns against violence affecting women and girls.
