Description
At a school in the Tadjoura region (northwestern Djibouti), Ibrahim, a 31-year-old teacher, combines teaching French with a deeper lesson on girls’ rights and well-being. In his classroom, he gently guides young students toward a future where girls are empowered and their health is protected, by raising awareness about the harms of female genital mutilation (FGM).
When his first daughter was born, Ibrahim faced opposition from his family, yet he chose to honor his commitment not to subject her to this harmful practice. He stated: “The most important thing is health. I urge all families to care about their daughters’ health and not to circumcise them.”
His stance has since spread within the local community, with more than 100 people now joining his opposition to the practice—demonstrating the power of individual awareness in mobilizing an entire community to abandon harmful traditions.
